About
IEEE Public Safety Technology Initiative Vision and Strategy
The purpose of the IEEE Public Safety Technology Initiative is to become the global Center of Excellence for public safety agencies, suppliers, practitioners, researchers, and all industry participants to discuss and exchange ideas on how emerging technologies can help public safety personnel be more effective in their work and support their sustained health and wellness. A Center of Excellence is a team, a shared facility or an entity that provides leadership, best practices, research, support and/or training for a focus area*.
The IEEE Public Safety Technology Initiative seeks the following goals:
- Investigate, identify, and prioritize opportunities for existing relevant technologies for solving real world challenges that public safety agencies are/will be facing
- Research new technologies for filling the gaps in public safety applications
- Launch and lead sustainable activities, products, and services to establish the use of technologies by public safety entities, and generate new revenue streams
- Engage, interact and collaborate, where appropriate, with public safety associations, industry consortia, academic and government entities

Background
IEEE Future Directions established a task force in 2020 to study and identify public safety technology gaps and opportunities. The IEEE Public Safety Task Force published a white paper and documented findings that identified and highlighted those items. The task force also held a successful workshop in September 2021. Afterwards, the IEEE Public Safety Technology Initiative was approved under IEEE Future Directions in January 2022.
IEEE Public Safety Technology Initiative Logo and Design Concept
The IEEE Public Safety Technology Initiative logo design was developed as a visual representative of its vision and strategy. The shield is a universal symbol in the public safety field. It is instantly recognizable and utilized across multiple disciplines. The design depicts the shield being strengthened by many new hexagons representing how the Public Safety Technology Initiative seeks to bring multiple public safety fields together, foster the creation of new technological solutions for public safety, and be a key, valued resource for the betterment of all public safety stakeholders. The hexagon symbol has been used for the initiatives given its fundamental use within telecommunications technologies and its symbolism of efficiency.
